Hugh Jackman Reveals His Personal Sacrifices For ‘Les Miserables’

In a new interview, Hugh explains the incredible lengths he went to bring Jean Valjean to life.

There's no doubt about it: When Les Miserables hits theaters Dec. 25, audiences will witness Hugh Jackman's most powerful and demanding role to date. Thief-turned-mayor Jean Valjean is "the kind of role you dream of playing," Hugh says in a new interview, though he's also quick to note that the role didn't come easy.

"I think musicals are the Mount Everest of movie-making," he says. "I don't think there's anything more difficult to pull off."

Hugh Jackman's 'Les Mis' Fitness Plan:

Not only did Hugh put his body through the ringer for this movie — he has virtually no fat on his body and looks crazy-good — but he also had to pay extra special attention to his voice, as there were some days when he sang 10 to 12 hours a day.

"There's no coffee, there's no dairy, I get eight hours of sleep," he said during filming. "I drink hot water with lemon all day long. I go on vocal rest, [and there are] some days where I don't speak at all. Honestly, I think my family cannot wait until I finish this movie. Who is this monk living with us?"

Hugh's Co-Stars Sing His Praises:

"He's been a rock for everyone around him," Russell Crowe says. "He's an absolute triple threat, you know? He's this singing, dancing, acting dude."

"This has been incredibly hard work across the board," Eddie Redmayne adds. "But having Hugh lead has made everyone up their game."

Even Colm Wilkinson — the man who originated the role of Jean Valjean on Broadway — can't help but sing Hugh's praises: "If you look at Hugh, and his work ethic, and the way he goes about what he does, he's so thorough and so intense."
