From ew, Three new wide releases could not top the powerful Inception, which in its third weekend remained in the top slot with $27.5 million. The PG-13 rated mind-bender lost only 35 percent of its value for a total that now stands at $193.3 million. And 12 percent of its take came from its IMAX screens, likely a factor due to repeat business for the well-received flick.
Paramount and Dreamworks’ comedy Dinner for Schmucks landed closest to Inception with a $23.3 million opening. The Steve Carell, Paul Rudd laugher opened in the range suggested by tracking, but with a B from exit pollster CinemaScore, audiences weren’t in love with the movie. Still, its score is the same as Date Night and I Love You, Man which could bode well for the Jay Roach-directed flick.

The other two wide releases may be in bigger trouble. Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore didn’t score with audiences. Bowing to $12.5 million and a fifth place opening, the kid flick clearly underperformed. It also earned a weak B- from audiences. The under-25 crowd liked the spy spoof better than their grown-up counterparts, but this may be just the film to prove to Hollywood that the talking animal movie has been played out. Charlie St. Cloud opened in sixth place for the weekend. It wasn’t an incredibly strong opening, but it’s right in range of the weekend’s estimates. Made for $44 million, the PG-13 rated weepie attracted Zac Efron’s female teenage base and with a B+ from Cinemascore, the film could generate some repeat viewings.

Holdovers made up the majority of the top five with last weekend’s new release Salt taking the third spot in the rankings. The Angelina Jolie-starrer earned an additional $19.2 million, a 47 percent drop-off from its opening weekend. The spy flick has earned $70.8 million after only ten days in release. Despicable Me took in another $15.5 million in its fourth weekend of release. The PG-rated animated movie is on the verge of $200 million, with $190 million in its cume as of today.
