(CNN) -- An extra in "Transformers 3" was seriously injured in Indiana on Wednesday evening during the filming of a scene for the upcoming movie, authorities said

"Preliminary investigation revealed that shortly before 7 p.m, the movie crew was filming a stunt using numerous vehicles and drivers," the Indiana State Police said in a statement. "During this stunt, an object struck a 2006 Toyota, hitting the vehicle, and then went through the windshield hitting the driver."

The incident occurred in Hammond.

The vehicle hit a median barrier wall, traveling about a mile before coming to a stop, according to police. The driver suffered a serious head injury and was airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.

Authorities are investigating the accident. The victim's name has not been released.

Hammond is in northwestern Indiana, about 20 miles south-southeast of downtown Chicago, Illinois.
