Sports: Mavs' Players Voted Not Lamar Odom A Playoff Share

“If Lamar Odom made any extra cash this season, it would have been with the reality TV show he did with his wife and not because of anything he did with the Dallas Mavericks. That’s because the Mavs players voted Sunday not to give Odom a share of the playoff money they earned this season. Instead, the Mavs decided to split their pool of money for finishing with the seventh-best record in the Western Conference and making the playoffs with the remaining 14 players on their roster.

With the total pot being $281,937, that means each player will receive $20,138.32. [...] In 50 games for the Mavs, Odom averaged career lows of 6.6 points and 4.2 rebounds, and shot a career-low 35.2 percent from the field in a career-low 20.5 minutes per game. Then, on Apr. 9 the Mavs parted ways with Odom and placed him on the inactive list for the rest of the season. ‘If the Lamar thing would have worked out and if he would have played like the year before when he was the best sixth man, I think we would have had a shot,’ forward Dirk Nowitzki, reffering to the Mavs’ chances of advancing in the playoffs. ‘It would have given us another playmaker, another guy that’s long, that can defend and rebound. But for whatever reason the stuff he was going through off the court was just too much. He couldn’t help us the way he wanted, the way we wanted, and we had to move on without him.’”

Sports: LaDainian Tomlinson Says He's 95% Retired

LaDainian Tomlinson is certainly one of the greatest running backs of all time. He deserves mention on the most interesting names available at running back on the free agent market. But it’s quite possible that his Hall of Fame career is already over.

Tomlinson told SI.com’s Jim Trotter that he is “95 percent retired.” He would only return to the game for the right situation and team.

It’s likely that Tomlinson’s phone hasn’t been ringing off the hook this offseason. While he was a very useful third down piece for the Jets in 2010, his production fell off last season. He had a career-worst 280 rushing yards to go with one touchdown (although he still caught 42 passes).

The sad reality of an NFL career is that most players don’t choose retirement. Retirement chooses them. With guys like Tim Hightower and Cedric Benson likely ahead of Tomlinson in line for jobs, it sounds like Tomlinson will be fully retired by the time September rolls around.

Movie: Andre 3000 to Play Jimi Hendrix In New Biopic

Andre 3000 isn't all the way out of the loop just yet. Lately he can be heard guest appearing on records with Beyonce, Drake and Lil Wayne, and now Andre Benjamin will be making a return to the big screen.

The eccentric rapper will portray the late great Jimi Hendrix in the biopic, "All Is By My Side." The film is currently in pre-production in Wicklow, Ireland and will begin a full six week production in Dublin directly after. The project will document Hendrix's life in England between the years 1966-1967 and will be written and produced by John Ridley (U-Turn, Three Kings).

The film will feature the time when Hendrix was first noticed in New York by Keith Richard's girlfriend, Linda Keith. The period is also when Jimi recorded his debut album that rocked the world, "Are You Experienced."

Music: Ice Cube Speaks On New Album

West coast rap veteran Ice Cube is preparing to deliver his tenth studio album sometime later this year. Back in November, Cube revealed that he was about seven songs deep into the new album. Now, in an interview with MTV News, the former NWA member elaborated briefly on the album.

"I'm working on a record right now, I think I'm gon' call it Everything's Corrupt," he revealed. "It's just really hardcore West Coast Hip Hop, what I do. I don't think changing the formula is what should be done. I think it's all about do what you do best and give the people what they want."

The new album will serve as a follow up to Cube's heavily criticized 2010 release I Am The West.

Sports: Tyson Chandler Named 2011-12 Defensive Player of the Year

Center Tyson Chandler became the first New York Knicks player to win the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday. Chandler received 311 points and 45 first-place votes from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters. The Thunder’s Serge Ibaka finished second with 294 points and the Magic’s Dwight Howard, who had won the award each of the previous three seasons, finished third with 186 points. Chandler has been arguably the most valuable player on the Knicks’ roster this season. He is the driving force behind the Knicks’ turnaround on defense. Last season, the Knicks ranked 22nd in defensive efficiency, a measure of points allowed per 100 possessions. After Chandler was obtained via a three-team sign-and-trade in the offseason, the Knicks surged to fifth in defensive efficiency, thanks largely to Chandler.

Entertainment: Wiz Arrested for Possession Again

While he's made it a habit to light up any chance he gets, the arrests are also becoming a part of his routine, as the Pittsburgh native was arrested once again for possession of marijuana, this time in North Carolina.

TMZ boke the story that Wiz was busted for the 2nd time in 10 days. They obtained the report from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina, which revealed that the rapper was ticketed for possession of marijuana after his concert in Winston-Salem last night after officers discovered 11.39 grams of pot on his tour bus.

Wiz was cited and released, but he's required to appear in court at a later date.

It was only a little more than a week ago when he was apprehended for possession of the product in a Nashville hotel after another guest smelled the aroma coming from his room. In both instances, Wiz was able to avoid arrest, only being cited and having to appear in court at some point.

Sports: Saints LB Jonathan Vilma Suspended For 2012 Season for Involvement in Bounties; 3 Others Suspended

The NFL suspended four players for their roles in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty system, including linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season.

In addition to Vilma, defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove (now with the Green Bay Packers) was suspended eight games, defensive Will Smith four games and linebacker Scott Fujita (now with the Cleveland Browns) three games.

All of the suspensions are without pay. The players are entitled to appeal the decision within three days. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell would hear their appeals.

The Saints seemingly had been bracing for the loss of Vilma, bolstering their linebacker corps through free agency. Linebackers Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne were among the team’s signings this offseason.

A league investigation found that from 2009-11 New Orleans coaches and players put together a bounty system that paid out improper cash bonuses for hits aimed at knocking opposing players out of games. The NFL says as many as 27 Saints participated.

Goodell already has suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season and fined the team $500,000. Saints former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is suspended indefinitely, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis begins an eight-game ban after the preseason, and interim coach Joe Vitt begins serves his six-game suspension at the same time.

Payton’s suspension began April 16 and runs through the Super Bowl, which, incidentally, is in New Orleans. During that time, Payton may not even have casual, non-football conversations with anyone on any NFL team without at least notifying the league office.

Technology: Apple Patents Software To Make Changing Your Number Easier

So, you’ve changed your phone number to escape that stalker (look, we’re sorry, we just wanted to sell you a pyramid scheme), but how do you let all 104 of your remaining friends know without manually texting ‘em? The answer lies in Apple’s newly granted patent, which aims to end the tedium by having your device recognize when your number switches and automatically send an updated contact entry to everyone in your address book. Of course, there’s nothing in the claims to say it’s discriminatory, so now we’ve got your number again — have you changed your mind about that pyramid scheme?

Sports: Floyd Mayweather Says Fighting Manny Pacquiao Is A Health Risk

A question sparked a 10-minute speech from Mayweather, regarding the tireless topic of why he and fellow pound-for-pound great Manny Pacquiao have not come to terms on a potential multimillion dollar fight.

In a response that eventually drew applause from his entourage, Mayweather once again said it is “basic common sense” that Pacquiao has used performance-enhancing drugs and getting in the ring with him would be a risk to his future health.

“Health is more important than anything,” Mayweather said. “Because guess what? When my career is over, if I’m hurt because of something that has happened in a fight, I can’t come to you and say, ‘I need (money).’ ”

Mayweather’s hardest point came when he admitted that he believes the boxing world doesn’t even care if Pacquiao is using or not — that the desire to see the two fight now surpasses any concern over his safety.

“People say, ‘We don’t give a f— if he’s taking or not; we just want to see the fight. We don’t give a f— about your health and we don’t give a f— about your family.’ ” Mayweather said.

“I care about my family. I love my family. They’re going to be there when no one else is there. When my career is over, you’re all going to move on to the next one.”

He went on to accuse Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who represents Pacquiao, and Don King of not caring about fighters’ well being and re-emphasized he won’t forfeit health for money. A fight against Pacquiao would be expected to be the highest grossing bout in boxing history.

“Don King and Bob Arum don’t see out the eyes of a fighter because they’re not a fighter,” Mayweather said. “All they care about is some f—— money. I care about a fighter’s well being because I am a fighter.

“I know how it is to have a broken rib the rest of your life. I know how it is to piss blood. You all don’t know nothing about this.”

Mayweather has pointed to Pacquiao’s rise through weight classes and the transfer of his power through them as evidence of steroid use. Since 2008, Pacquiao has won titles in five weight divisions and recorded four knockouts in nine fights.

“It took me years to get to here — years,” Mayweather said. “I’m going up in weight but I’m not walking through no damn fighters. (Pacquiao) is 106; now he decides to walk through (Miguel) Cotto? Cotto can’t knock down (Shane) Mosley, but can he?”

Mayweather began his professional career at 130 pounds in 1996. He’s fought the majority of his career as a welterweight. Saturday’s fight against Cotto will be contested at 154 pounds.

In December 2009, a deal between the two nearly came to terms but ultimately fell through when Pacquiao refused to submit to random blood testing.

The Filipino and Arum, who represented Mayweather earlier in his career, since have softened their stance on that request. Mayweather scoffed at Arum’s comments Tuesday, referring to him as a “professional liar.”

“This is how the world is, you get writers saying, ‘Floyd is scared,’ ” he said. “No, Floyd cares about his family. Floyd is smart. “You all know for a fact I’m not scared. You all know that.”

Technology: US Government Is Giving Google $35 Million

Google and its partner Onix Networking just won a $35 million contract to run the U.S. Department of the Interior‘s new cloud-based email and collaboration system. This wasn’t always a sure bet for Google. In 2010, the Department of the Interior awarded Microsoft a $59.3 million contract to run its email and collaboration system. Google and its Ohio-based partner Onix Networking quickly filed a suit to block this contract. In Google’s view, the Interior Department’s procurement process unfairly favored Microsoft and never gave it a fair chance. Google finally withdrew its lawsuit last September after the Department scrapped its plans to use Microsoft’s solution because its original decision was “now stale in light of new developments in technology and entrants into the market.”

The arguments between Google and Microsoft got rather heated at one point last summer. Microsoft even alleged that Google falsely advertised that its solution was certified by the General Services Administration for use in government agencies.

Once completed, the Department of the Interior will become the second major U.S. government agency to switch to Google’s cloud. The first agency to make the switch was the General Services Administration. A number of state governments also made the switch to Google’s solution recently.

This being a government contract, things are obviously not as easy as just moving all the existing mailboxes over to the new system. Instead, this contract gives Google and its partner the right to “demonstrate they can meet the Department’s objectives for an integrated suite of tools and services, information assurance and regulatory compliance.” Once that is done – hopefully by the end of December 2012 – the actual migration will start. In total, this process will involve the migration of over 90,000 mailboxes away from the Department’s aging systems to Google Apps for Government.

Microsoft, of course, was not too happy with this decision and has issued the following statement: Microsoft has a positive, longstanding relationship with the Department of Interior and we are working on a number of enterprise-wide initiatives with the agency. Although we are disappointed by this award, we will engage with our partners and DOI to review and understand the reasons for this decision. Microsoft remains committed to providing our customers with the cloud services that have the performance, security, privacy and other capabilities they expect and deserve.
